Overview

The Sylvie™ Net Editor is fairly self Explanatory, but I am sure there are going to be poor souls like myself who just need the security of a good ReadMe file.  I hope this one would clear up any problems encountered.  There shouldn't be too many, this program is very simple.  Like a pack of cards, 52 pieces of cardboard with designs on them, you can play the most amazing number of games.  The process of scripting Sylvie™ is the hard part.  Like the cards with the very few elements, there are a mind numbing amount of combinations that can be achieved.  I have discovered a number things I never knew about the Beta, so let's come inside and look around...

Installation of SNE 03b,04bup, and 05bup

Installation of SNE requires the use of a compression program such as PKWare, or WinZip.  Note the Downloaded file is in .ZIP format, not any of the newer formats.  Either of these files can be downloaded for a trial period from one of these locations.

PKWare - www.pkware.com
WinZip - www.winzip.com

These programs come in Self Extracting format, so you will not have to worry about having the program to decompress the program (Wouldn't that be self defeating?  I have always wondered if any programs like that exist out there.  "For your inconvenience, this program requires the use of itself to...")  Once you have the utility installed, you shouldn't have to do anything more than Double Click on the zip file in Windows Explorer, or My Computer.  You will have the file catalog itself in the program window, and you will need to select a temporary directory to unzip into.  This will decompress the setup program into that directory.  Find the directory you have the setup files in and again double click on Setup.exe to install the Sylvie™ Net Editor.
The updates are the same.  You will need the Sylvie™ Net Editor 3b installed before you update.  Unzip (Decompress) the files sne04bup.zip, or sne05bup.zip into a temporary directory, and Double Click on the Setup.exe file in that folder or directory.  You will see an error Dialog Box along the way, Ignore it.  Mike tells me he has never been able to bypass it.  Make sure to point the update to the directory or folder you have your Sylvie™ Net Editor in.  Once the setup program is finished, you should see a new Icon for the editor in your start menu, and you will be finished.

First, to get the proper use of your Sylvie™ Net Editor, don't close it by mouse clicking on the X in the corner of the window.  The proper way to close SNE is to use the "EXIT" button on the interface (See section 1).
Make sure to backup the Sylvie™ .net file.  Open Windows Explorer or My Computer, and find the file.  You should find it in C:\Program Files\Verbot™ .  Double Click on the file to open it in Notepad.exe, or open Notepad and then the file.  When you have the Sylvie™ .net file in the Notepad window, select File from the pull down menu, and then "Save As."  Name the file someway you will be able to remember, such as Sylvie™ .bak, I like to name them Sylvie™ 1.net, Sylvie™ 2.net so I can compare files.
Once you open SNE, you should see the SNE interface.  Each of the different aspects of the program are used to make Sylvie™ give certain responses to different things one will say to Sylvie™ , and if she doesn't have a pattern to find, will give a standard answer such as, "I am sorry, but due to incompetent scripting on the part of my creators...".  Don't take anything Sylvie™ says personally.  Sylvie™ belongs to a class of computer programs called "Chatterbots," that simply respond to questions and stimulus from the speaker.

  1.     Location: The place you have the Sylvie™ .net file.  The Net file contains all the patterns, responses, and actions Sylvie™ will take.  The default directory is already in the field, so if you installed it the way the -Setup Program- would like, you won't have to change anything.  However, if you installed in say, "Virtual People I know," you will have to point the program to the net file located there.  In this case, C:\Virtual People I know\Sylvie™ .net.  When you choose the EXIT button, and not the cancel box in the corner of the window (the X along with the square and the dash.), the program will remember the last place you saved it.    Up?

  2.     Heading:  This is the name of the rule Sylvie™ will look for when you ask a certain question according to the pattern of the words you will use.  The heading name has to be in small letters, one word, or numbers.  If you use 2 words you must delete the space in between.  In other words, if the name of the rule is to be, "this word", you have to make it "thisword".  The most use you will get out of this is to define one rule in comparison to another, and to link one rule to another.  If you link one to another, you will have to set the activation level accordingly.  The most common of the stimuli will be the Positive and Negative, the activation in this case should be set to an even level.
The second field in this section is one number, between 1 and 9.  This allows the rule to be named as part of a group of rules, and retain its definition.    Up?

  3.     Activation Level:.  You can adjust the level by tapping the arrow keys, or selecting (Mouse Clicking) the triangle pointing down.  The level of activation will determine the response you get from Sylvie™ .  The range is from 1.0 to .1, default is .2.  The higher the number, .2 to .3 say, the more likely Sylvie™ will respond to that pattern.  So if you think it better to have Sylvie™ respond to a Grilled Cheese sandwich, instead of Macaroni and Cheese, you would like to set the activation level of the rule that talks about Grilled Cheese to a higher level.  If you set the level too high, you will find her responding to that rule when it has nothing to do with the subject however, so there you are.    Up?

  4.     Priority:  You can change the priority of the rule by typing in your own value, or by selecting the triangle pointing down.  In general, the higher the number, the more likely Sylvie™ will fire that rule.    Up?

  5.     Keyword:  Keywords trigger the response from Sylvie™ in different patterns.  If you would like Sylvie™ to talk about cooking for example, the pattern would involve food of various kinds.  The patterns would then have to involve words that are in relation to this subject such as "Cheese" or "Bread."  Wildcards (*) are nessacary for words you will add in the parts between the keywords of the pattern.  For example, if you start a conversation about the Grilled Cheese Sandwich, you might start out like, "Well Sylvie™ , I like Grilled Cheese. Do you know how to make one?"  You will have to edit this rule so Sylvie™ will catch on to the idea of what you are talking about.  The rules keywords should look something like this in that case: *like, *grilled, *cheese.  The program will add the first wildcard to the pattern.  There must be one word in each of the fields of the Keyword box, if there are more words to the pattern, you can add the wildcards in the between the words manually, and the program will treat it all as one word.  The pattern box will make one pattern at a time, so if you have several patterns in the rule, do them one at a time.    Up?

  6.     Set Pattern Button:  When you are satisfied with the patterns you have set, this will place them in stone.  You can not remove what you have done once you press this button unless you open the file manually with a text editor such as Notepad, and remove it.  In order to do that, you will have to find the file in Windows Explorer, or My Computer, and go to the Folder or directory you have it in.  Double Click on the file Sylvie™ .net, and if you need to     Up?

  7.     Action Tag  If you would like Sylvie™ to perform some action, such as a smile, you will need to add the action to the rule.  You will be able to adjust the action by the arrow keys, or selecting the down triangle.  Some of the tags will do computer functions, such as opening a different program or change the way the Verbot™ window looks.  Others will make Sylvie™ "Smile" or "Blink."    Up?

  8.     Response:  This is probably the most important part of SNE.  The response is what Sylvie™ will give when you give her a stimulus.  If I were to ask about the "Grilled Cheese Sandwich," and Sylvie™ had nothing to say about it, you would just get one of the default responses.  Though Sylvie™ may be beautiful, generous, and kind, if you delete the .net file or save it to someplace she can't find it, she gets downright mean.  If you want to fuss with it, I suggest you remove the children from the room because I have heard some complaints about her language.  If you have that sort of mind, you can make Sylvie™ cuss like a sailor, and the Captain knows what a "Sailor" can cuss like.
To get the kind of response you want, you have to keep a sense of humor.  Sylvie™ has good abilities to tell a joke, but will phase out when things confuse her.  I guess I don't need to remind you she doesn't know the difference, but who wants a "Drone" around either?  Remember Sylvie™ will be the mirror of your soul and if you teach her kind things, you will be looked on favorably.  On the other hand, if you are just mean, you will probably put your fist through the screen, so go ahead.    Up?

  9.     Rule to Link  When you have a rule that you would like to link to another rule, you should add the rules to link to in this field.  Usually you would like to have all the proper responses in the same group.  If say you want to talk about "Pizza," you could have a lloonnngg discussion about what kind of topping should go on it.  Man that could be a talk!  And, Sylvie™ might not like Pineapple after all!  Of course, if you try to feed her any, I would at least like an Email telling me about her reaction (In other words, did the screen get messy, did she like what you chose, ECT.)
You would want to name the rules something like: <cheese-1>, <nocheese-1>, <kosher-1>, and so on.  The only thing you have to remember about using this link is to use the FULL format, +:<cheese-1> for a Positive Response, -:<cheese-1> for a Negative Response, and so on.
    Up?

  10.     Save Rule Button  Once you have the rule edited to your satisfaction, you will press this button to save the rule to the file.  Once you press this button (Using the mouse click.) the rule will be set in stone.  You will only be able to get it out again with a text editor, such as Notepad.exe.    Up?

  11.     Forget Rule Button  If you are totally unenamored with your rule, or made a mistake you can't just fix like setting a pattern you don't like, this button will clear all the fields.  Remember you can change most of the fields without having to resort to this.  This is the last alternative.    Up?

  12.     Preview:  Here is your Rule in summary.  The Preview box gives a basic outline as to how your rule will look in the Net file, and how Sylvie™ will respond.    Up?

  13.     Exit Button:  The Exit Button should be used instead of the "X" in the corner of the window.  This allows the program to save settings such as the last location of the Net file in the Location Field.    Up?

  14.     Who Did This?:  The Credits!  I asked Mike if there was an "Easter Egg", and he said there was.  Where it is, I don't know, I am not good at finding those things.  If you want it you will have to look for it (Don't ask Peter, the only thing he has in common with the bunny is the name.).    Up?

  15.     doctor-pc@kih.net:  This is you one stop shop for sending Mike an Email.    Up?

  16.     www.vperson.com:  Ok, your two stop shop.  This will take you to Sylvie™ s home, if you have your connection to the web up.    Up?

Word from the Programmer, Dr PC!

    The FUTURE:

Well, 0.5b is out (but the only difference between it and 0.4b is an addition to the "ACTION TAG" dropdown list), and we've placed a "freeze on the code". What this means is, unless someone comes up with a TRULY SPECTACULAR idea for an addition, we're not going to add anything else to the program. We WILL still fix any bugs that come up, but that's about it.

Sometime in the (very near) future, 1.0 will be released (non-beta version!). This will probably be the FINAL version of the program (unless some more bugs show up, in which case, we'll take it from there). There is *always* the possibility that more versions will come out as Sylvie™ advances... :) But, until then, 1.0 is our "goal".

Always remember, if you need some help, write/call/visit me!

Thanks to Peter (and the rest of the gang at VPI) for coming up with Sylvie™ , and GREAT THANKS to all the guys and gals who helped test SNE. Love ya!
